The SmoothFuel Nutritional Score (SNS) – Smoothie Evaluation

The SmoothFuel nutritional score (SNS) is a rating of the nutritional value of a meal or smoothie. The SNS is a way to evaluate the nutritional properties of a meal or smoothie in an independent and unbiased way. The SNS does not evaluate taste or appearance but instead looks solely at the nutritional data. A low score does not necessarily mean that a smoothie is unhealthy. There are two reasons a smoothie could achieve a low score. The first is that it contains excessive or very disproportionate amounts of macro and micronutrients, this is potentially unhealthy. The second is if a smoothie lacks nutrients. This is also potentially unhealthy however if the smoothie forms part of a balanced diet in which other meals and smoothies all contribute towards reaching your RDIs then it is perfectly healthy!

How is the SmoothFuel Nutritional Score calculated?

The SmoothFuel nutritional score is calculated by taking the nutritional data of all of the ingredients and putting it through a series of mathematical equations that evaluate the smoothie based on a variety of factors such as , its macronutrient composition, vitamin and minerals content with respect to RDI values, polyphenol and antioxidant content and the relation of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids.

How does a smoothie achieve a score of 100?

This is quite difficult, if not impossible. In order to obtain a score of 90+, a smoothie would need to have a balanced composition of macronutrients in relation to the total amount of calories that it contains. It would need to contain a fair to a good proportion of the RDI values for vitamins and minerals. It needs to contain some polyphenols and antioxidants, bearing in mind that there are no set RDI values for antioxidants and polyphenols a smoothie is not punished for only having small amounts. The Smoothie needs to maintain a good ratio (4:1 or better) of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids as research shows that a disproportionate amount of omega 6 to omega 3 could be the cause of many health problems.

The SNS will be gradually expanded to take into account further factors so as to better evaluate the nutritional properties of food.
